- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Fairfax County Rodent Removal Tip:
How to identify rat feces and where is it found?
Nobody wants to discover they have rats on their property, and often enough, they don't, until it's far too late and the rats' presence has caused quite serious damage. The reason why rats are so difficult to spot is that they're secretive creatures who have become, down the years, exceedingly good at hiding. Furthermore, being largely nocturnal creatures, it's unlikely that you'll encounter them during the day.
So your best bet, as a concerned homeowner, is to look for signs of a rat infestation, and the most obvious sign is the presence of rat feces.
How to correctly identify rat droppings…
When you go looking for rat droppings, never ever attempt to handle them with your bare hands. This can put you in contact with several serious diseases that the rat in question carried. So always wear protective material, when you begin to dispose of the rat feces.
A good indicator is size.
No, we're not suggesting you bust out the old measuring tape, but a quick examination can give you a fairly good idea if you've even got rats at all. Rat feces, as one might expect, are fairly small, though usually a bit larger than a grain of rice. If the droppings you find are consistently smaller than that, then it's quite likely you're not dealing with a rat at all, but rather a smaller creature, such as a mouse or even a cockroach.
Check the color.
This step doesn't ascertain if it's rats or something else per se, but can be a useful trick to help you figure out how long you've had this rat problem. You see, fresh rat feces tends to be an intense black color, and usually dries out and turns to gray as time passes. So if you find gray feces, that's not really a good sign, ‘cause it means you've had this rat problem for a while.
What shape is it?
You know how we said rat droppings bear an uncanny resemblance to rice? Well, that's true in shape also, as most rat droppings tend to be shaped pretty much like a sausage. However, this isn't a general rule, and you might also encounter droppings in the shape of a pill.
Quantity matters.
Your average rat leaves between 30 and 50 droppings a day, so the general count of feces can be a good indicator of the type of rodent you're dealing with. Think that's a lot? Mice leave up to 150 (and usually no less than 70) in a single day!
So where are you most likely to find rat droppings?
Interestingly enough, this last bit can also help you determine whether you're dealing with a rat or a mouse. Because of their different sizes, mice can get into tighter spaces than rats can, and so if the dropping is in a very tight space, such as inside a cabinet or a drawer, then it's most likely a mouse. If you find the feces along a wall, however, then it will probably be a rat.
But which rooms in the house are most likely to house rat droppings? See, a rat isn't likely to just drop one on the kitchen table, as rats are smart enough to stay away from such heavily-populated areas. Instead, rats will flock to areas of the house that you don't go into as much, and where they can enjoy some peace and quiet, aka the basement and the attic. Not only are they less likely to be discovered, but since these rooms often serve as storage space, they also have a better chance of finding hiding spots.
